Rutgers University is one of the nation's premier public research institutions. Its mission is threefold: excellence in education at all levels, advancement of knowledge through scholarship and research, and far-ranging public service to the citizens of New Jersey, the nation, and the world.

Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, Rutgers is the eighth oldest institution of higher education in the country. It is the only university to have grown in designation from a colonial college to a land-grant college to a major public research institution. Today, Rutgers is a diverse community of 49,000 students and more than 10,000 faculty and staff. It encompasses 29 degree-granting schools on three regional campuses in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden, and includes more than 130 specialized research institutes. Approximately 10,000 courses are offered each year in over 100 major fields of study.
